No, you haven\u2019t read that wrong. A small freshwater crocodile has been found in a Central Coast<\/a> backyard over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Australian Reptile Park was called to a home at Umina on Sunday afternoon when a freshwater crocodile was discovered by a resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australian Reptile Park<\/a> Operations Manager and veteran Crocodile Keeper, Billy Collett, was able to safely capture the crocodile and transport it back to the Park, where it received a full health evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per the Australian Reptile Park, the female freshwater crocodile was approximately one metre long, is estimated to be between 8-10 years old and appeared to be in good health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it is believed that the crocodile was being kept illegally as a pet, as freshwater crocodiles are not native to the Central Coast region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Australian Reptile Park is urging the owner to come forward or contact relevant wildlife authorities if the crocodile belongs to a licensed reptile keeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Collett said the Sunday afternoon call came as quite a shock for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re grateful to the homeowner for alerting us to the presence of the crocodile,\u201d said Mr Collett.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFreshwater crocodiles may not be as dangerous as saltwater crocodiles, but they are still wild animals and can be unpredictable. It’s always best to leave them to the experts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Collett issued a reminder to the public about the danger of keeping wild animals as pets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to remind the public that keeping wild animals as pets is illegal and dangerous without a license,\u201d added Mr Collett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cIf you come across a crocodile or any other wild animal in your backyard that you think doesn\u2019t belong there, please contact the authorities immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The Australian Reptile Park has reported the incident to National Parks & Wildlife<\/a>, who will determine the next steps for the animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, the crocodile is in safe hands with the Australian Reptile Park\u2019s Reptile Team and will undergo a full veterinary examination today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
