The discovery of the 300 plus images back in the 1970\u2019s baffled locals, and lead to much speculation about their creation.<\/p>\n<p>Some believe they come from Egyptian travellers who sailed to Australia some 5000 years ago and, after becoming ship wrecked, carved their story into the stone.<\/p>\n<p>However, academics are a little less convinced.<\/p>\n<p>According to Professor Boyo Ockinga, an Egyptologist from Macquarie University, the glyphs couldn\u2019t possibly be from that time period.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2019-01-22_10_33_42-gosfordglyphs_gosfordglyphs_instagram_photos_and_videos.png\" width=\"393\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Image:Instagram\/@gosfordglyphs<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would be wonderful\u2026but I\u2019m afraid it\u2019s just not possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst of all, the way they\u2019re cut is not the way ancient Egyptian rock inscriptions are produced, they\u2019re very disorganised,\u201d he told ABC News back in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s also a problem with the actual shapes of the signs that are used. There\u2019s no way people would\u2019ve been inscribing texts from the time of Cheops from the signs that weren\u2019t invented until 2500 years later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ockinga also disputed the idea that Egyptians were shipwrecked in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf by any chance they had reached Australia, you\u2019d expect them to land on the west coast rather than over the east coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Professor goes on to say that he estimates that the glyphs ae no more than 100 years old, and were likely created in the 1920\u2019s when a widespread interest in ancient Egypt swept the nation after the discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun.<\/p>\n<p>He also raised the point that this was around the time that many Australian soldiers were returning from Egypt where they had been stationed in World War One. There have been other recorded cases of \u201cEgyptianisation\u201d around the area, highlighting the Sphix Memorial in Kuring-Gai Chase National Park.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2018-10-10_12_29_41-sphinxmemorial_hashtag_on_instagram_photos_and_videos.png\" width=\"392\" height=\"258\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Image: Instagram\/@chimhai<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite the professor\u2019s explanations, many locals and history buffs still love the idea of the Central Coast somehow being connected to ancient Egypt, and recent interpretations of the carvings has done nothing to dispel that idea.<\/p>\n<p>In a translation completed by AncientCode.com, the hieroglyphs do in fact tell the story of Egyptians being \u201ccarried by ship\u201d as the myth goes. It that was stranded on a \u201cstrange land\u201d, causing the crew to travel east for eight months. It then goes on to explain their struggles to survive in this unknown territory, surviving off plants and struggling to find water. Park safely in this area.
