Over $80 million of work is backlogged.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

If you feel like you\u2019re hitting way more potholes and rough roads on the Central Coast than anywhere else \u2013 you\u2019d be right.<\/p>\n

According to a new report from the NRMA, the Central Coast has the biggest roadworks backlog when it comes to repairing roads in the area.<\/p>\n

While Newcastle and the Hunter were also highlighted as problem areas in the report, the Central Coast Council recorded the biggest backlog with $84 million of work still needing to be done. This amount is $20 million above the second highest backlog – $64 million in Maitland.<\/p>\n

However, judging by the 2018\/2019 Budget, the Central Coast Council is looking to make a massive dent in that number, with $70 million planned for roads, transport and drainage works. \u00a0<\/p>\n

In wider NSW, the report found a whopping $2.2 billion of work is currently backlogged, and $1.7 million of that must be funded by the small local councils.<\/p>\n

NRMA Director Coral Taylor has stated that councils are struggling to keep up with the required funding for roads and transport as the amounts needed to improve them continue to grow.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last two years, the gap between what councils need to maintain local roads at a safe and satisfactory standard has grown 30% – this isn\u2019t good enough\u2026\u201d Ms Taylor stated.<\/p>\n

NRMA\u2019s report calls on the state and federal governments to attempt to meet the shortfall by sourcing funds from the Snowy Hyrdo Legacy and Regional Growth Funds.<\/p>\n
