“This is kind of like a death trap.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

For most of us, the humble clothing donation bin goes relatively unnoticed in our day to day lives. They only become relevant when we clean out our wardrobes and finally make the choice to get rid of those size 10 jeans we haven\u2019t fit into since McLeod\u2019s Daughters was on the air.<\/p>\n

However, according to experts, these seemingly insignificant metal boxes are dangerous \u2013 so dangerous in fact that they have cost people their lives.<\/p>\n

In recent years, the number of deaths due to the donation bins has skyrocketed as charity workers, the homeless, or scavengers attempt to enter the bin through the pull-down slot.<\/p>\n

While many of these deaths have been occurring in Canada and other colder countries where the homeless are in need of blankets or coats, deaths have occurred in Australia.<\/p>\n

Most recently, police found a man dead sticking out of a donation bin in the inner-city suburb of Roseberry, with the assumption he had perished while foraging for clothes.<\/p>\n

But how would a person lose their life to one of these contraptions?<\/p>\n

According to University of British Columbia engineering professor Ray Taheri, the bins are designed to prevent people pilfering but not to allow those who pilfer to escape their clutches. Those who have died become wedged against the metal flaps.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to the compression to his or her chest and a lack of oxygen, this is kind of like a death trap,\u201d Taheri told CTV News.<\/p>\n

Engineering experts are pushing for the bins to be removed, or the existing bins be modified in small ways to save lives. This could include an emergency release, an alteration of the slot, or a complete redesign on the bin.<\/p>\n

Australian charities The Smith Family, Anglicare and Vinnies are yet to speak on the matter.<\/p>\n
