It\u2019s celebrations all around up at the Australian Reptile Park, with their resident Komodo Dragon laying 15 eggs in an Australian first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daenerys, the Australian Reptile Park\u2019s female Komodo Dragon laid 15 eggs with keepers required to retrieve the eggs to ensure the ultimate chance of survival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there was one minor hitch, a single venomous bite from a Komodo Dragon is potentially life-threatening with keepers risking life and limb to retrieve the eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully for the keepers, the egg removal was made easier thanks to keepers having such a close relationship with Daenerys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keepers bribed Daenerys with some food, luring her to from the nest box into another area of the enclosure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reptile keepers then had the delicate task of removing the fragile eggs from the nest site and transporting them to the artificial incubator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The egg retrieval was almost completed without a hitch, however during the removal of the last few eggs, the chamber started collapsing and Australian Reptile Park<\/a> keepers had to scramble to protect the precious eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But thankfully, the quick-thinking keepers were able to protect all eggs and remove the final fragile eggs without and damage coming to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the eggs were retrieved, Daenerys returned to the nesting area and continued digging unaware of the eggs being removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eggs will now remain under lock and key for the eight-month incubation period, with keepers at the Park keeping a close eye on the Komodo eggs at all times and ensuring the temperature is at an optimal level and constant checks on the eggs for their viability and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incredible moment is one for the history books, with no other Australian zoo, sanctuary or facility having successfully bred Komodo dragons and led through to the egg-laying stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means positive signs for the breeding program and an important step for the species as they are considered under threat in the wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Head of Reptiles Daniel Rumsey said it was touch and go, to begin with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of work goes into the breeding of Komodo dragons. These are two animals that could potentially kill each other and do some serious damage to us keepers in the process. It was a bit touch and go during the initial introductions, however our female became receptive and the two mated successfully,\u201d Mr Rumsey said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next stage is to ensure there are viable conditions for the eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe next stage is ensuring the successful laying of the eggs. Komodo dragons can become what is called \u2018egg-bound\u2019 in which the eggs get trapped inside them if you don\u2019t provide optimal laying conditions,\u201d Mr Rumsey said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis includes us building a specially designed nest box that has deep enough sand and ensuring the temperature is optimal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Komodo Dragon is a living dinosaur and the world\u2019s largest lizard. Komodo Dragons can grow up to 3-4 metres in length and weigh over 100kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Found on the Indonesian island of Komodo, there is a stable population of about 3,000 to 5,000 Komodo dragons in the wild.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The clutch was laid only one day after the species was reclassified as \u201cendangered\u201d on the IUCN Red List<\/a> according to the Australian Reptile Park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
