You know, this year has thrown a lot at us. Lockdown 2.0, La Ni\u00f1a, and even a new Adele album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But just when you think it\u2019s over… it\u2019s not with 2021 delivering one last special gift just in time for Christmas. An increase in snakes and spiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s right, NSW Health has issued a warning for residents across the state to keep an eye out for our least favourite slithery serpents and angry arachnids because they\u2019re on the move as the weather warms up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to wildlife experts, the recent mouse plague, coupled with the wet and humid weather we\u2019ve been having, has created the perfect condition for several venomous snakes and spiders to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while we love that they\u2019re living their best lives, we\u2019d love it even more if they could do it a little bit further away from us, \u2018kay? Thanks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, in some semi-encouraging news, being bitten by a snake or spider is pretty rare (but never zero), so it\u2019s important you know what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should seek immediate medical attention, for a snake bite, even if it\u2019s just suspected, according to NSW Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should also keep them as still as possible, call an ambulance and apply pressure immobilisation bandages but a tight tourniquet should not be applied, and the bite site should not be washed, cut or sucked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the person bitten collapses, then you should start CPR immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, most spider bites are relatively harmless but if you get bitten by a big black spider or funnel web, it is a medical emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is bitten you should keep them still, call an ambulance and apply a pressure immobilisation bandage, with a further bandage to the entire limb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bite from a funnel web can cause severe pain, sweating, vomiting, difficulty breathing and muscle twitching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A redback spider bite may result in pain and redness, but it is not considered life-threatening so does not require bandaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you\u2019re game enough when you come across the Funnel Web Spider, you can safely collect them in a secure container for milking to create lifesaving antivenom at the Australian Reptile Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can find the drop-off points for Greater Sydney and the Central Coast on the Reptile Park website here<\/a> but maybe don\u2019t collect snakes, okay?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
