Prime Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed the controversial Petroleum Exploration Permit (PEP-11) has been rejected by the Federal Government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Morrison has confirmed he has advised NSW Deputy Premier Paul Toole and the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA) of the Federal Government\u2019s decision to oppose PEP-11<\/a>, saying it is not the right project for these communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis project will not proceed on our watch,\u201d Mr Morrison said,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGas is an important part of Australia\u2019s current and future energy mix, but this is not the right project for these communities and pristine beaches and waters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom Newcastle through to Wollongong, my Government has listened to the concerns of local Liberal Members and candidates and their communities and we\u2019re putting our foot down,\u201d the Prime Minister has said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Mr Morrison confirmed the Government will be opposing the application due to strong community opposition right the way along the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Federal Government also cited the amount of funding required for the proposal in time and a disagreement in the application for the extension of the permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Federal Member for Robertson Lucy Wicks says she knows the Central Coast community will welcome the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know the Central Coast community will really welcome this announcement that the Australian government has taken the first step to formally reject the application for the PEP-11 area off the Central Coast,\u201d Ms Wicks said,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Our community has been pretty resolute in its statements, very public statements of concern about this PEP-11 area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have said no to PEP-11 The Prime Minister voiced his opposition to this particular application earlier this year and now the Australian government has taken the first step to formally reject the application for the PEP-11 licence,\u201d Ms Wicks said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Federal Member for Dobell Emma McBride says the Government has made promises like this before.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter years of campaigning and calls for action, the Government has now told the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator of their intention to reject the licence,\u201d Ms McBride said in a statement on her Facebook page,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut, they\u2019ve made promises like this before and they’re 10 months over the deadline.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the very least, we need confirmation from the Resources Minister that he has a drawn a line in the sand on PEP-11 once and for all,\u201d Ms McBride said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the regulator, the NOTPA will now grant the applicant of the permit 30 days to respond to the notice of intention to refuse the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The controversial PEP-11 permit \u2013 which covers an area from Wollongong to Newcastle \u2013 has been up for debate for some time, facing strong community opposite right across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
