When it comes to our furry friends<\/a>, we feed them just about anything. Leftovers, the piece of pizza that fell on the floor, the meat that\u2019s been sitting in the fridge and smells a little too funky to eat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up until now we thought the only food we can\u2019t feed our dog is chocolate. But there\u2019s actually a few foods that can be potentially harmful to Rover if he gets into the pantry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some key foods you should keep away from your dog (and the dangers they pose if you don\u2019t):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chocolate<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all know about this one, but why<\/em> is chocolate harmful to dogs<\/a>? While it\u2019s heaven in a block to humans, chocolate can cause hyperactivity and, in high doses, heart damage, seizures and even death in dogs. The caffeine and the chemical theobromine in chocolate is what makes it potentially lethal to our furry friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, just about anything from the chemical family called methylxanthines<\/a> is no good for a dog to consume. Coffee and tea also contain methylxanthines, but your dog is more likely to get into the chocolate stash than the coffee one (what can we say? Like owner, like doggo).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much chocolate is a problem? It depends on the type of chocolate. The white variety has almost no methylxanthines, milk chocolate has some and dark chocolate has a lot. Baking chocolate is the most concentrated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mild symptoms, like hyperactivity, appear when a dog has had about 20mg of methylxanthines per kilogram of their body weight. Heart problems occur with about 40mg, seizures at 60mg and death at 100-200mg\/kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a blanket rule, chocolate = bad for dogs. End of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onions and garlic<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onions and related vegetables like garlic, shallots and leeks can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain in dogs. More seriously, the sulphur-containing chemicals in these foods can destroy red blood cells, causing anaemia which, in rare cases can be deadly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sulphur isn\u2019t destroyed by cooking, so beware of any cooked meals with onions in them also. Check and recheck your table scraps before feeding to your doggo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much is a problem? It only takes 15-30g of onion per kilogram of the dog\u2019s weight to cause detectable changes in the blood<\/a>. This is equivalent to a 14kg dog eating a whole, large onion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onions and garlic are used in some pet foods and treats, so it\u2019s worth checking labels and making sure your dog doesn\u2019t eat too much of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grapes and raisins <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dogs can develop acute kidney failure after eating grapes, raisins or zante currents<\/a>. The dogs may vomit after eating the raisins but this does not mean they are in the clear; the kidney damage takes time to occur. Symptoms may take two to three days to present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tricky part is that it\u2019s unknown how many grapes or currents pose a risk to dogs. Research collected has found dogs which died after eating just a handful of raisins, while others have eaten a kilogram without showing any ill effects. Why<\/em> grapes are toxic to dogs is also unknown. So, until the \u2018how much\u2019 and \u2018why\u2019 questions are answered, many vets consider any amount of raisin consumption to be an emergency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
