The NSW Government has announced a statement of intent to negotiate the potential transfer of ownership of Peat Island to the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council has submitted a land claim for Peat Island, with the Council seeking to use it for further economic and cultural opportunities for the local Aboriginal community and all Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If successful, the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council would possibly develop an Aboriginal Discovery Centre, Indigenous Walking Path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The possible plan would also include cultural tourism opportunities which will capture and help preserve the rich Aboriginal cultural heritage on and surrounding Peat Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast, Adam Crouch said the statement of intent marked a step forward in reconciliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Government recognises the significance of Peat Island, in both its Indigenous and European histories, and the impact it has had on all Australians over the last hundred years,\u201d Mr Crouch said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorking with the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council gives us an opportunity to partner with a local land council to pay respect to these shared histories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are also working closely with local community representatives to establish a memorial in the proposed chapel precinct to remember the residents of the island\u2019s institutional past,\u201d Mr Crouch said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council Chairperson B J Duncan said it is an enormous opportunity for the local Aboriginal community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is an enormous opportunity for the local Aboriginal community and all Central Coast residents, providing an economic future and strengthening culture for the grandchildren of our grandchildren,\u201d Mr Duncan said.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will create something that showcases and preserves Aboriginal culture and contemporary Australian history in a way that respects the past use of Peat Island and its former residents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeat Island can become a centrepiece of Australia\u2019s cultural tourism in NSW, showing that you don\u2019t need to go to Central or Northern Australia to celebrate the richness of Aboriginal culture and heritage in contemporary Australia,\u201d Mr Duncan said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The current planning proposal for Peat Island and Mooney Mooney, which seeks to allow new land uses for Peat Island and its surrounds, will clear the way for the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NSW Government will still work through community submissions, however, ABC Central Coast<\/a> is reporting some opposition to the strategy from disability advocates and another local Aboriginal group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
