Calls have increased for Central Coast Council and the NSW Government to develop a \u201cDogs In Open Space Strategy\u201d in response to more demand than ever before for more public spaces and off-leash areas for residents and their pooches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch MP, is leading the call, asking for Central Coast Council to continue to develop a \u201cDogs In Open Space Strategy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Tesch says there is a for more open spaces that cater to dogs, noting that they foster healthier communities through opportunities for exercise and socialising with fellow dog-owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDogs really are our best friends, and they deserve to have access to large open public spaces to play and run. The good thing about dogs too is that they encourage us to get out and exercise and engage with other locals,\u201d Ms Tesch said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Ms Tesch also said it\u2019s an opportunity for the NSW Government to take action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs the Perrottet Government is calling for walkable and active communities, this issue presents an opportunity for them to finally take some action. Off-leash dog areas should be available to all locals in a safe walking distance,\u201d Ms Tesch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The push for a strategy for more off-leash spaces follows on from major park upgrades across the Central Coast with the Peninsula allocated funding for parks \u2013 albeit without off the leash areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

$1.5 million has been allocated to Rogers Park, Woy Woy, and another $8.25 million for the Umina Skate Park and Precinct Redevelopment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, local resident Ian Tylee says upgrades to these parks should include off-leash areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are spending millions on park upgrades and yet there are no plans for dog- friendly areas. They\u2019re getting skate parks, basketball courts, but what about us?\u201d Mr Tylee said. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes you\u2019ve got the beach but at my age my knees are bad so I can\u2019t walk along there too much, and there are many older people like me. Also, they\u2019ve got all this negative messaging in the paper with \u2018keep your dogs on a leash\u2019 yet do not provide any positive messaging or solutions,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Tesch says she hopes the issues will be addressed so pooches across the Coast can enjoy more of the region without a lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen managed effectively, considering both public safety and animal welfare, it is possible for more of our public areas to be off-leash. There are many accessible and appropriate areas where we can do this, and when park infrastructure is updated it is a consideration that needs to be taken into account more often,\u201d Ms Tesch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
