The collection of plastic bags you\u2019ve been hoarding under your sink is officially a relic of times gone by  with single-use plastic bags banned across NSW. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From today, Wednesday 1 June, any plastic bag with a thickness less than 35 microns is now banned in NSW, including those made from biodegradable, compostable or bio-plastic materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ban does not apply to the thicker bags already sold in supermarkets and barrier bags such as bin liners, other waste bags, compost caddy bags, produce and deli bags or bags used to contain medical items. But everything else? Donezo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Single-use plastic bags aren\u2019t the only items being banned, single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery \u2013 which includes knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks and food picks \u2013 are set to be no longer available from November 1 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Single-use bowls and plates are also set to be banned from November unless they are intended to have a spill proof lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ban, like that for bags, also has caveats;- it doesn\u2019t extend to serving utensils \u2013  e.g. tongs and salad servers \u2013 or items that are a part of the packing such as straws with drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will be some exemptions to the ban of single-use items in certain settings for medical needs and for people with a disability.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The November ban will also not extend to items such as meat or produce trays, packaging used to transport items from point to point and anything which is a part of the packaging to seal or contain food or beverages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November is the big one with single-use plastic cotton buds and rinse-off personal care products (think exfoliants, cleansers, shampoo and conditioners) containing plastic microbeads also banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, polystyrene cups and containers will also be banned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This push to ban single-use items brings NSW in line with the rest of Australia, which have already banned single-use lightweight plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NSW Government is aiming to reduce the impact of plastic waste on the environment by 60% and remove almost 2.7 billion items from entering the NSW environment over the next 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
