The Central Coast<\/a> has been named as the next location for an offshore artificial reef, which will reel in thousands of visitors to our region each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Central Coast was chosen after an extensive expression of interest process which saw over 1,200 submissions from the recreational fishing community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The specific design of the new reef is subject to further approval but it is likely to include two steel stretches across an area of no more than 350 square metres to enhance fishing opportunities by creating habitats for local aquatic ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Central Coast\u2019s newest artificial reef will be classified as a marine reserve, similar to that of the decommissioned HMAS Adelaide, which was sunk at Avoca Beach in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast Adam Crouch said the artificial reef will bolster tourism and the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur coastline boasts some of the most vibrant ocean environments in NSW and the ex- HMAS Adelaide is a fantastic example of the remarkable transformation that a single site can have on the surrounding area,\u201d Mr Crouch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe ship is quite rightly designated as a marine reserve, but I want to ensure that local fishers have a similar type of reef to enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCreating a million-dollar Offshore Artificial Reef will be an amazing tourism driver, while also providing a benefit to thousands of keen local fishos across a range of ages,\u201d said Mr Crouch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A location is yet to be confirmed for the artificial reef, with the NSW Government set to undertake detailed assessments and consult stakeholders on the reef\u2019s location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sandy area approximately 6km south-east of the Terrigal<\/a> Haven is currently listed as the preferred site on the Department of Primary Industries website.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
