The NSW Government has committed a further half a billion dollars to the long-awaited fast rail<\/a> between Sydney and Newcastle, which is set to reduce travel time between the two cities to just 25 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The $500 million in funding from the upcoming state budget will go towards the first stage of the Northern Corridor, which will help to build two electrified rail tracks between Tuggerah and Wyong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The money is also set to go towards new platforms and station upgrades and new bridges \u2013 including over the Wyong River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new works could see travel times between Sydney and Newcastle slashed to just one hour and 25 minutes between Sydney and Gosford.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

However, the funding commitment is subject to a new agreement with the new Federal Government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said at a press conference in Gosford on Saturday (June 11) that this announcement is different from previous ones.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been talked about for a long time but no one has brought money to the table,\u201d Mr Perrottet said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can’t set up a vision for your state if you don’t come with the funding that\u2019s required.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast Adam Crouch said the commitment will improve the capacity and reliability of the network for local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis investment will help improve the capacity and reliability of the intercity network, and will make journeys to and from our region faster and easier for Central Coast commuters,\u201d Mr Crouch said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shadow Minister for the Central Coast David Mehan said in a statement on Facebook<\/a> that he hopes the announcement is \u201cnot just a promise made with an eye to next year\u2019s state election\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Mehan said he will keep pressing the Government for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFast rail needs to happen so I\u2019ll keep pressing the government for hard information because there is very little currently available,\u201d Mr Mehan said in a statement on his Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe only plans available right now are for upgrades to Tuggerah Station which don\u2019t involve any extra tracks to allow slow trains to be passed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Site investigations as part of the project are set to commence before the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
