So, why do our bodies twitch when we fall asleep?

Well, these sleep twitches are known as hypnic jerks and are more common than you think, with some research suggesting that 60 to 70 per cent of people experience them.

We don’t exactly know what causes us to twitch when we are sleeping, but the most basic explanation is that hypnic jerks are a natural part of the body’s transition from alertness to sleep.

Hypnic jerks occur when nerves “misfire” during the process. While this definitely makes sense, there are a few other theories about what causes us to twitch during our sleep, which we’re going to explore thanks to Domayne Bedding & Tempur so they can help you get a better night’s sleep.

Check out a few theories as to what causes hypnic jerks here:

Stimulants:

Stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine can impact your body’s ability to fall asleep with ease and stay asleep. The chemicals in these products may prevent your brain from reaching deep sleep and, instead, shock it ‘awake’ from time to time, causing your body to respond.

Exercise:

Daily physical activity can help us sleep better, but sometimes exercising too close to our bedtime can impact our sleep.

Some research suggests we may be more likely to twitch when trying to sleep if we exert ourselves too close to sleep. Our brain and muscles may not be able to slow down fast enough to allow us to rest – hence why our bodies sometimes twitch when we fall asleep.

Anxiety & Stress:

We all know what it’s like to lay awake in bed with your mind buzzing thanks to a little thing called anxiety. Well, it turns out anxiety and stress can impact us even when we do eventually fall asleep.

Anxious thoughts keep our brains active, even as our muscles try to relax. It is theorised that hypnic jerks occur when our brain sends out ‘alert’ signals to our bodies as we drift asleep.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://cms.star1045.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/pexels-acharaporn-kamornboonyarush-1028741-1024x683.jpg" alt="Lack of a regular sleeping pattern or trouble sleeping, including chronic insomnia or even just a bad night’s sleep after tossing and turning can increase your risk of hypnic jerks. However, if they happen so frequently that your quality of sleep is impacted, it’s best to contact a medical professional.

Unfortunately, your GP can’t tell you how to deal with your partner twitching you awake either.
