Not as sweet as it seems.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The humble\u00a0pavlova<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 alongside the iconic lamington and downright delicious scotch finger biscuit \u2013 is an Australian national treasure. Except you\u2019ve probably heard the upsetting news by now that the delicious meringue isn\u2019t in fact Aussie, but belongs to our neighbours in New Zealand.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve just about (read: not really) made peace with the fact that the pavlova originated in NZ. In 2008, Professor Helen Leach wrote The Pavlova Story: A Slice of New Zealand\u2019s Culinary History<\/em>, saying the first true pavlova recipe was Pavlova Cake from New Zealand in 1929. Well, if it\u2019s in a book it must be true\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But turns out, even this is a lie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Andrew Paul Wood, a New Zealander, and Australian Annabelle Utrecht traced the origins of our beloved pavlova and, in 2015, revealed <\/a>they can \u201ccategorically state\u201d the modern pavlova began life as a \u2013 get this \u2013 German torte. It wasn\u2019t until the dish crossed the ocean and entered the US that it eventually reached its final form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically: the pavlova us Aussies know and love today originated in the United States. Blasphemy!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe idea that it was invented in New Zealand or even Australia is a total fiction, as is the notion that the first pavlova desserts are of Antipodean origin,\u201d Wood said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe first recipe for a pavlova dessert is not the 1926 Davis Gelatine jelly. It is the 1911 Strawberries Pavlova recipe and this dessert is a dish on the move.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Dr Wood And Ms. Annabelle found more than 150 pavlova-like meringue cakes served with cream and fruit prior to 1926. They also found more than 50 dishes named after Pavlova occurring before 1927.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We might not be able to claim the origin of the pavlova, but at least we can still lay claim to lamingtons and scotch fingers, right? Right???? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
