We come bearing some good news, Central Coast. The 93 endangered Loggerhead Turtle hatchlings<\/a> we’ve all been keeping tabs on were released back into the ocean over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we were busy eating all our chocolate, authorities were releasing the endangered Loggerhead Turtle hatchlings into the ocean at Shelly Beach on Sunday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service teamed up with the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council, Central Coast Council, NSW TurtleWatch and Marine Wildlife Rescue Central Coast to release the hatchlings back onto country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first time a loggerhead turtle nest has been recorded this far south, and the first time Darkinjung LALC performed a cultural handover of turtle eggs into care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Darkinjung LALC will lead the Welcome (back) to Country and smoking ceremony for the turtles before they return to the waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe as Aboriginal people have a strong, not just physical, connection to the turtle and its relationship to our people,\u201d said Uncle Kevin (Gavi) Duncan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s exciting for our people to see this as this hasn\u2019t happened on Country for a long time and it should be a beautiful night,\u201d Uncle Gavi said.<\/p>\n\n\n
