An off-duty, surf lifesaver from The Entrance<\/a> has been recognised for Surf Life Saving NSW\u2019s Rescue of the Month for the rescue of a teenage boy late last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Entrance Surf Life Saving Club member Patrick Jacob was working from home on an overcast afternoon on April 17, 2023, when his neighbour called and alerted him to an unfolding incident at the nearby North Entrance Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A group of boys had visited the beach despite the weather and a 14-year-old was caught in a rip and struggling to stay afloat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI was working away in Excel when I got the call, so it certainly startled me into action,\u201d Patrick said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI live quite close to the beach and my neighbour had called her husband first, but he lives a few doors further down and she thought I\u2019d be quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick grabbed a rescue tube and didn\u2019t hesitate to run into the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI grabbed a rescue tube I had at home and ran to the beach, past my neighbour who I told to ring Triple Zero, towards where the boy\u2019s friends were, I couldn\u2019t see what they were pointing at but I went out to sea and followed their directions,\u201d Patrick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick eventually found the boy in the surf and extended the rescue tube he was carrying to keep a safe distance as the teenager was panicking by this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rip had carried them into a precarious position, and it wasn\u2019t going to be easy to get back to shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cI said we can\u2019t go in, we\u2019re going to have to go out, and he wasn\u2019t too thrilled by that but it was our best option,\u201d Patrick recalled.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There, he flagged down assistance from Lifeguards who were already on the scene and coordinating Rescue Water Craft to assist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jet ski shortly collected them from the water, exhausted but okay and delivered them back to the beach where the young boy was assessed by paramedics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was pretty full on,\u201d Patrick reflected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick revealed the outcome could\u2019ve been a lot different if the boy hadn\u2019t been rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThe lead lifeguard at North Entrance confirmed to me that the kid would have drowned, it was an overcast day, no one on the beach whatsoever,\u201d Patrick said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHis friends didn\u2019t call Triple Zero, they were in the water thinking about going in to save him, so it could\u2019ve been so different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick also praised his fellow surf lifesavers and the training they gave him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m so glad for the training I received from Janet Lindsay and Peter Cooper. They trained me to know what to do in that situation and I\u2019m grateful for the support of the volunteers that came down to the beach as it was unfolding and were there as support once we got back to shore,\u201d Patrick said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJesse Anderson and Czes Lawicki from North Entrance and Leigh and Dan, the Council Lifeguards, they were all great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s good to know within myself how I\u2019d act in this situation as well. I\u2019d always wondered if I\u2019d hesitate if the waves were big or if there\u2019s no one else around, but I acted in the way I\u2019ve been trained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patrick will now go forward to be considered for the Rescue of the Year at the Surf Life Saving NSW Awards of Excellence in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
