The final skate took place last night.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The doors to Erina Ice Arena closed yesterday afternoon for what could be the last time as the building undergoes urgent repairs. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Lendlease, the owners of the building, are closing the arena for 12 months to remove the external cladding that has found to be a serious safety risk after the same cladding caused major fires in London and Melbourne in the last five years.<\/p>\n

However, despite the rink officially only being closed 12 months, Erina Ice Arena\u2019s lease has been terminated and there is yet to be any word on resigning or reopening.<\/p>\n

The announcement of the closure came in late July with Erina Ice Arena releasing a statement detailing their sadness surrounding the shutdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re saddened at the decision to close the building and Ice Arena, however we recognise that this have been done in the best interests of the community,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thank everyone for their patience and understanding while the modifications take place.\u201d<\/p>\n

A change.org petition has been launched to ask Lendlease to commit to re-opening the ice rink after the repairs, and has been signed by 7,844 people within the in the community. \u00a0The petition can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
