Planning how you\u2019re going to spend your refund.<\/p>\n<p>So, we\u2019ve partnered up with the guys over at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxtoday.com.au\/\">Tax Today<\/a> to find out about five hidden expenses you could be missing in your tax return that could get you a little extra cash come refund time!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laundry <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/hidden_expenses_claim_tax_2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you spend your week in the same uniform day in and day out, we\u2019ve got some good news for you \u2013 not only can you claim the cost of the uniform if you were required to purchase it, but you can also claim the cost of doing your laundry. The ATO says you can claim $1 per load of washing, drying and ironing of your uniform (50c if there\u2019s other clothes in the load), or claim the full cost of your dry cleaning if you have your receipts. You\u2019ll need to make sure you\u2019ve got some written evidence handy for the ATO. A few years ago, the ATO came out and said that handbags are tax deductible if they must be used for business purposes. You see, handbags come under the same category as laptop bags, and can be claimed if your using it to carry work items such as documents or a laptop. You can\u2019t claim it if you\u2019re just using it to carry your lunch. Unfortunately, your hummus and carrot sticks don\u2019t count as work items. Now, before you run out and splash your cash on the most expensive handbag you can claim, it\u2019s important to know that you can only claim the business use percentage of your bag \u2013 meaning if you use your bag outside of work, then you\u2019ll need to deduct the personal use percentage from your claim.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s seems like a lot of work for a bag right? To do this, you\u2019ll need to use something called the log book method which involves keeping a log book of all the kilometres you travel for business purposes for three months and calculating how much you use your car for work. If you\u2019re a member of a union, association, guild or alliance, and you pay an annual fee or subscription, you\u2019re eligible to claim those fees back on tax. It\u2019s estimated that around 1.5 million Aussie\u2019s are members of unions \u2013 that\u2019s 1.5 million people that could have a little extra cha-ching in their pocket come tax time.
