The rollout comes after successful NSW trials.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

NSW drivers will soon be able to ditch the plastic with digital driver\u2019s licences to be rolled out across the state in August of this year.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made by Treasurer Dominic Perrottet on Tuesday, and comes after successful trials that saw 14,000 drivers in suburbs of Dubbo, Albury and Sydney\u2019s east use the technology over the last few months.<\/p>\n

The new system will see digital licences hosted on smartphones via the Service NSW app that will be protected by a pin, and aim to ensure that people have easier access to their proof of identity.<\/p>\n

“Smartphones have become de facto wallets and we’re using cutting edge technology so that drivers can use a digital licence in everyday scenarios,” said Minister for Customer Service, Victor Dominello.<\/p>\n

The program will also include proof of identity cards, proof of age cards, boating and fishing licences, Vessel Registration, RSA and RCG cards, and Working with Children Checks.<\/p>\n

The cards can be used when interacting with police, entering a licensed venue or as proof of identity.<\/p>\n

Monister Dominello assured NSW residents that the new technology will be protected, and will keep identities safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DDL is hosted securely on the new ServiceNSW app, locks with a PIN and can be accessed offline\u2026It will provide additional levels of security and protection against identity fraud, compared to the plastic driver’s licence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The system is opt-in, and people can still choose to carry their traditional licences and cards if they wish. The digital versions, however, will not be valid in other Australian states or when travelling overseas.<\/p>\n

To access a digital licence in August, you\u2019ll need to download the Service NSW app and add your licence to your MyServiceNSW account.<\/p>\n
