The options come after the Central Coast paid almost $60 million in waste levies.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Central Coast residents could soon see some major changes to their bins including less red bin collections, higher tip fees, and new green bins rules as a part of the Central Coast Council\u2019s \u2018war on waste\u2019.<\/p>\n

The changes come at the council continues to battle the waste problem on the Central Coast \u2013 an issue that has cost the region millions of dollars in the last three years.<\/p>\n

Over the two financial years from 2016 to 2018, the Central Coast Council was required to pay almost $58 million in compulsory waste levies to the NSW government.<\/p>\n

As a result, the council is now developing its first draft waste management strategy, considering such actions as reduced red bin collections, tip fee increases, and allowing food waste to be disposed of in the green bin \u2013 all with the end goal of reducing the amount of waste that goes into the landfill.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to a waste habits study undertaken by the Central Coast Council in 2018, many Central Coast residents are failing to utilise their bins properly, leading to contamination and high amounts of materials that could have otherwise been recycled ending up in landfills.<\/p>\n

The study found that 21.5% of items in red bins could go into the yellow bin, and 13% of the items in recycling bins were unrecyclable or contaminated the entire bin.<\/p>\n

Before the plan is introduced, the council is asking for feedback on the strategy in an online survey they can be taken here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
