The crackdown begins this month.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Central Coast Council has announced that it will be joining forces with NSW Police to crackdown on speeding in 50km\/h areas across the Central Coast in the month of May.<\/p>\n

The crackdown will involve the Council installing large speed warning signs on strategic roads, the distribution of educational messages, and police targeting drivers who exceed the 50km\/h speed limit in built-up areas.<\/p>\n

In a post on their Facebook page yesterday, the Central Coast Council stated the move was \u201ca bid to save lives and reduce the incidence and severity of speed-related road crashes on 50km\/h local roads.\u201d<\/p>\n

Council went on to reveal the severity of the speeding problem on the Central Coast.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpeeding continues to be a serious concern on the Central Coast, with over 22% of all crashes having speed as a contributing factor, which is almost 6% higher than the state average.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the Transport NSW website, zoning for speed limits evaluates the surrounding areas and ensures the driver has adequate time to react to any distractions or hazards such as a traffic, pedestrians or accidents. Going above the set speed limit will result in the driver having a reduced reaction time.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In NSW, going just 5km over the speed limit can result in a $119 fine and one demerit point for a fully licenced driver, and $119 and four demerit points for an L or P-plater.<\/p>\n

Travelling 10km\/h over the limit can result in a fully licenced driver being fined $275 and stripped of three points, while L and P-plate drivers will be fined the same amount but lose four demerit points.<\/p>\n
