{"id":924,"date":"2019-04-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-08T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/uncategorized\/nsw-whale-watching-season-shaping-be-busiest-yet\/"},"modified":"2019-04-09T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-08T14:00:00","slug":"nsw-whale-watching-season-shaping-be-busiest-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/lifestyle\/nsw-whale-watching-season-shaping-be-busiest-yet\/","title":{"rendered":"NSW whale watching season shaping up to be the \u2018busiest yet\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/photo-1450045439515-ff27c2f2e6b1.jpeg\" alt=\"black fish dove into ocean at daytime\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Whales have been spotted as early as March 21st!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The official whale watching season doesn\u2019t start until June 1st, but large whales have already been spotted travelling up the coast, leading to experts predicting the \u2018busiest\u2019 whale watching season the east coast has ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>Whales have been spotted off the coast of Port Macquarie as early as March 21st \u2013 over two months ahead of the June migration.<\/p>\n<p>The Organisation for the Rescue and Research Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) has revealed that since the March 21st spotting, there have been an estimated 15-20 sightings along the North Coast \u2013 something that\u2019s never been seen in the history of ORRCA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time they\u2019ve been spotted in numbers this early,\u201d ORRCA rescue manager Leigh Mansfield said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always been the odd one travelling in March and April but this is most we\u2019ve ever had this early.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/photo-1544049861-d094d7f85926.jpeg\" alt=\"black whale during daytime\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From June, tens of thousands of whales can be spotted travelling along the eastern coastline as they migrate north to their breeding grounds off the Queensland coast, and can be spotted returning to the Antarctic up until the end of the November. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second vice-president of ORRCA Jools Farrell revealed that the reasoning behind the early sightings was young males looking to have a \u2018good time\u2019 before the larger, older males arrive at the breeding grounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey want to get up there (to the breeding grounds) to see if they can have a bit of a fun time with a female before the bull whales come up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the bull whales are travelling \u2013 they\u2019re the adult males \u2013 the young yearlings don\u2019t have a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s estimated that over 38,000 whales could be migrating up the NSW coastline \u2013 a 10 per cent increase in numbers from 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEE ALSO:<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/articles\/registration-and-licences-introduced-aussies-drones\">Rego and licences introduced for drone owners in Australia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Written by Kate Stevens\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Images: Unsplash\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whales have been spotted as early as March 21st!
