The recent rainfall and humidity is making the creepy crawlies more active. \u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

While most Coasties have been hibernating during the recent rainfall that hit the Coast last week, the weather has brought out of hibernation with funnel web spiders becoming more active due to the high humidity and recent rainfall.<\/p>\n

The change in weather conditions often result in the spiders finding shelter where ever they are able to.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re strictly nocturnal so they\u2019re only going to be moving around at night,\u201d the Australian Reptile Park\u2019s Jake Meney\u00a0told ABC Central Coast<\/a> during the last influx of funnel webs.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce the day rolls around that the spider had to find somewhere to hide and if it\u2019s inside the house or even in your backyard and you\u2019ve got a pile of clothes lying around or even a pair of shoes that\u2019s exactly where they\u2019re likely to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

While you may be tempted to grab the bug spray or a sturdy shoe upon coming across a funnel web, the Australian Reptile Park is urging those brave enough to attempt to catch the spiders and hand them into the park. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The Australian Reptile Park utilise the milk of the spiders to continue their three-decade project surrounding the development of anti-venom.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been providing venom to the BioCSL since 1981 and it\u2019s estimated that over 1,500 lives have been saved since its introduction,\u201d Australian Reptile Park curator Liza Vella explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have 80 male funnel webs here right now, but our goal is to house between 300 and 400.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to staff at the Australian Reptile Park, catching funnel webs is actually surprisingly easy.<\/p>\n

“It’s absolutely not something that would seem natural for a person to see one of the world’s most dangerous spiders and reach for a jar instead of a shoe but that’s what we’re urging people to do,\u201d Jake Meney explains.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are very easy spiders to catch – they can’t jump, they can’t climb smooth surfaces – so you quite literally put a jar in front of it and they will walk straight in.”<\/p>\n
