{"id":981,"date":"2019-03-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/uncategorized\/coles-and-aldi-raise-milk-prices-help-farmers\/"},"modified":"2019-03-19T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T14:00:00","slug":"coles-and-aldi-raise-milk-prices-help-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/lifestyle\/coles-and-aldi-raise-milk-prices-help-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Coles and Aldi raise milk prices to help farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gettyimages-178493804.jpg\" width=\"607\" height=\"404\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The move works to help farmers who have been in drought for around 12 months.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Supermarket giants Coles and Aldi have chosen to raise prices on bottles of milk in order to assist dairy farmers struggling during the long-running drought.<\/p>\n<p>From Wednesday 20th March, the two supermarkets will add an extra 10c to the cost of their two and three litre bottles, raising the prices to $2.20 and $3.30 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after Woolworths increased the price of their milk in late February \u2013 a move that, at the time, was not back by Coles and Aldi.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/coles.jpg\" width=\"897\" height=\"672\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Both supermarkets have stated that the increase will be a short-term solution whilst the Federal Government works to reform the current farm-to-supermarket process that sees many farmers paid low prices for their milk by milk processors.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dairy Australia, farmers are currently only receiving an average of 44c per litre from milk processors across Australia, with the number dropping to 42c per litre for farmers in Victoria and South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>And according to ABC News, the production cost per litre for dairy farmers sits at around 41c \u2013 meaning dairy farmers could be making just a measly 1c profit per litre.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.star1045.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/gettyimages-154143791-scaled.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, milk processors set the price per litre for milk, and an ACCC report found that they often add high profits onto milk before selling on to supermarkets.
